The port of Frahier and the irrigation canal

PRESENTATION

The port of Frahier and the irrigation canal

The canal is not very well-known to the people of Champagney. These notes taken from topographic accounts and departmental archives will tell you a little more about it.

The lock :

It is 48 metres long, 5,20m wide and 4m deep. The height clearance under bridges is 4 m. It is beautiful with its 20 x 50cm Vosges sandstone blocks. The feeder canal had to be filled in (for safety reasons) but the internal canal is accessible. The double gates were never installed.

The underground passage through the forest :

Situated between Frahier and Châlonvillars, it is 640m long, it looks like the older Chérimont part with three shafts, but its coping and facing are in worse state, the masonry was of poor quality.

The two west locks :

Visible from the Châlonvillars end, they now allow the free passage of water from the Rahin via the reservoir.

The underground passage at Chérimont :

It is 1330 meters long and has a total internal height of 8m. The 80cm coping which runs the full length of the passage is still in good condition except for the parts opposite the shafts and the east part where several coping stones have collapsed. The pink stone facing is in very good condition.

Six shafts spaced out at 180m intervals are used for ventilation, they are between 50 and 70m deep. The last unfinished shaft was dug to a depth of 10m. A respectable coping 3m high and of an outside diameter of 4m protects them.

The walls of the canal :

They are still visible several hundred meters away on both sides of the tunnel. They have been eroded by the vegetation and the water which cannot get through the blocked pipes any more. This canal reappears after the Main road 19 from the Port of Frahier, it passes over several bridges in Frahier. The underground passage of 35 meters planned for the passage of the RN 19 has been filled in.
